A Brief Introduction to Clamp-On Flowmeters

Ultrasonic flowmeters utilize sound waves to calculate fluid flow velocity in a pipe. The frequencies of an ultrasonic wave transmitted into a pipe and its fluid reflections remain the same under no-flow conditions. Thanks to the Doppler effect, the amplitude of the reflected wave differs under flowing conditions. The frequency shift will increase linearly as the liquid flows quicker. To find out the rate of flow, the transmitter processes signals from the sent wave and its reflections.

Transit time ultrasonic flowmeters send and receive ultrasonic waves between transducers in both the upstream and downstream directions in the pipe. It takes the same time to travel between the transducers upstream and downstream under no-flow conditions. The movement of the upstream wave will slow under flowing conditions and take longer than the quicker downstream wave. The disparity between upstream and downstream times is reduced when the liquid flows more rapidly. To assess the rate of flow, the transmitter calculates upstream and downstream time.

Ultrasonic flowmeters are known for their reliable accuracy and are frequently used for custody transfer of natural gas and petroleum liquids. They boast high turndown, they can handle extreme pressures and temperatures, and they can clamp onto the pipe exterior.

Furthermore, these flowmeters don’t require a lot of maintenance.
We currently offer advanced clamp-on flowmeters like the Dynasonics TFX-5000. Contact us to learn more.
