A Few Things You May Not Know Regarding the McCrometer V-Cone

Did you know that the material construction of the McCrometer® V-Cone is among its most customizable components? Popular metals tend to be the norm for the V-Cone, but titanium is an option customers can explore. For applications that may involve especially corrosive fluid or dangerous environment, titanium may prove extremely useful, particularly if concerns regarding space and weight are major factors. As an example, desalinization or seawater piping systems on floating platforms or ships may necessitate the use of low-density metal. Titanium is not as heavy as steel and offers excellent durability, which means a V-Cone can last as long as 25+ years.

V-Cones are available in incredibly large sizes. Back in 2014, the largest spool-piece V-Cone was a whopping 78” meter comprised of carbon steel and stainless-steel cone designed for propylene gas measurement. As a result of its huge size, the meter underwent several non-destructive tests including radiographic and hydrostatic testing.

Oil and gas applications like gas lifts and improved oil recovery often rely on the V-Cone, but its measurement benefits have also proved useful in uncommon applications. In an observational project, a 1” V-Cone was made to be installed inside of a nuclear reactor next to a fuel source. The custom stainless-steel meter had several custom pressure taps in a counter-flow heat exchanger to test cooling water.
