Choosing Your AMI System Solution

Last time we discussed a few of the fundamental differences between AMR and AMI systems. Today we’re taking a closer look at the latter and the different ways a utility can use the technology to conserve and reduce non-revenue water.

With a metered leak detection, an AMI system raises a flag if a continuous flow of a metered account is detected based on a certain timeframe. Each hour, a communication module will record a consumption reading. Once the reading is recorded, the module is able to detect if there has been flow during the previous hour or if consumption has not occurred. All data moves through an AMI collection engine where utility workers can view potential leaks and other pertinent data such as if leaks have been repaired or how long they have been occurring.

District metering involves grouping and collecting stored data via a software application and it includes several steps such as determining the meter(s) that feed water into the district, combining the total consumption of these meters on an interval-by-interval basis. Non-revenue water may occur due to leaks, theft or incorrect metering. However, when a district metering analysis has been performed, a greater amount of information is available as to where leaks may be happening in the network.

Acoustic leak detection involves acoustic leak sensors, AMI technology, and data analysis software which collectively allow utilities to remain proactive about leaks. This approach also uses a communication module where workers collect and analyze vibration patterns from anywhere in the distribution system, improving critical water infrastructure. Acoustic leak detection cuts down on non-revenue water and conserves water by proving early leak warnings, reducing repair costs by finding leaks before they become an expensive problem. By pumping and treating less water, utilities extend the lives of their facilities.
