Electromagnetic Flow Meters 101

fpiAlso referred to as mag meters or magnetic meters, electromagnetic flow meters are volumetric flow meters recognized for their lack of moving parts, significantly improving their durability while reducing the need for maintenance or costly replacements. Over wide flow ranges, these meters can deliver an impressive accuracy flow rate of ± 0.5% or better. Thanks to their design, there is no risk of flow impediment. These meters are especially useful in municipal and processing applications and they are a top choice when conductive liquids like water need to be accurately measured.

All mag meters operate using the Faraday’s Law of Electromagnetic Induction principle to measure the velocity of a liquid. This principle essentially states that as fluid moves through a magnetic field, its conductive particles cause voltage changes across a magnetic field. It is this variation that allows for measuring and calculating water flow velocity through a pipe.

Besides the low maintenance, a major advantage of mag meters is the option to order them for use in considerably large pipe sizes. The McCrometer FPI Mag, for example, is easily installed using a hot tap, removing the need to shut down a line.
