Steam generating power plants often see varied types of water flow, from process samples of small size to much larger condenser cooling water. Monitoring these different flows can prove to be a challenge, particularly the high volume flow of larger pipes or pipes that lack enough straight run sections where a standard meter could be set.
When it comes to the power industry, the largest flow is cooling water to the steam surface condenser, with cooling water flow rates typically averaging 200,000 gallons per minute or more at large fossil plants being a common occurrence. Accurate flow measurement is vital to keep track of condenser performance, as fouling or scaling can rapidly develop, which may be overlooked if there is no reliable flow data in place.
Electromagnetic flow induction is a proven way to ensure accurate flow data, and the McCrometer FPI Mag Flow Meter is among the most effective tools. Electromagnetic coils located within the sensor create magnetic fields that are affected by water flow. Stainless steel electrode pairs on the Mag Flow Meter sensor’s exterior collect the induced voltage generated by the water flow. All voltage signals are transmitted to a converter that determines a flow velocity average. The converter then multiplies this average velocity by the pipe cross-sectional area to create the volumetric flow rate. With the FPI Mag Flow Meter, there is no need for a long straight run of pipe either upstream or downstream of the tap. Plus, it is able to be hot tapped into an existing pipe so that there is no need to shut down equipment in order to install it.
