A ray of sunshine is illuminating Green Bay, Wisconsin’s efforts to modernize its aging public infrastructure. According to a Green Bay Press-Gazette article published back in June, reports of sewer backups have considerably dropped over the past ten years, by more than ninety percent in fact. The reasons for this substantial decrease include increased sewer inspection and cleaning efforts.
The stark drop is a dramatic difference from 2009 when Green Bay reported well over 200 backups. These backups can cause widespread issues if left unresolved, including wastewater and sewage flowing up from floor drains, sinks, and toilets, resulting in damaged homes and some highly unpleasant odors that must be cleaned up. These backups are typically caused by factors such as aging pipes, freezing and thawing, or roots that may cause flow obstruction.

This easily deployable tool can detect sewer line blockage in just three minutes or less using a pair of components called the Transmitter (or TX unit) and the Receiver (or RX unit). Both of these components work together to listen and interpret acoustic signals to detect if a blockage exists. The SL-RAT uses an easy to understand score system to communicate the level of blockage in a pipe without getting too technical. It also has a built-in GPS which simplifies the organization of specific sewer line data.
