As we approach the end of 2018 and look forward to where 2019 will take us, it’s worth taking a closer look at what the future has in store for Florida and its water and how conservation efforts have improved. According to a Florida Trend article, the state was using just over six billion gallons a day of water three years ago. That number will likely increase by more than fifteen percent to another 1.1 billion gallons a day by the time the year 2035 arrives.

There is some good news to report, however. Florida’s water management districts have evaluated several water conservation opportunities and projects aimed at improving water supply to ensure water will flow freely until 2035. Despite the greater projected need for water, residents and businesses in Florida have reduced the amount of water they use by more than twenty percent since the early 1980s. If we take a broader look at the nation, water usage is the lowest it’s been in over forty years. Reasons for the lower usage include better conservation efforts as well as stricter watering restrictions and building codes.
