U.S. Sugar Corp. in Clewiston, Florida could not get their raw water propeller meter to calibrate to Water Management District Standards. The meter is used to provide water to their Sugar Cane Refinery operations. Roy Carter, Mark Ezell and Howard Whidden from U.S. Sugar attended a Large Meter training school at The Avanti Company’s, Avon Park Training Center and learned about McCrometer’s V-Cone technology. They learned of the V-cone’s ability to provide accuracy in less than ideal piping conditions, its ability to pass suspended solids and no moving parts.

Upon investigation Mark and Roy determined that the existing meter set application did not have enough straight pipe upstream for the propeller meter and that by utilizing theV-Cone technology they could achieve excellent accuracy without having to re-pipe. In fact, the meter set has an inlet pipe with a 45 degree elbow, 12” pipe upstream, reduced to a 10” pipe, through a gate valve bolted directly to the meter. Installing a 10” V-Cone meter custom manufactured to fit where the old meter was, allowed U.S. Sugar to achieve the accuracy required without expensive and time consuming re-piping.

Offering the customer a McCrometer model V2 made the project easy, with the meter, manifold and flow computer pre-packaged, pre-calibrated, priced and sized. If you look at the picture carefully you will note that the lifting rings are on the bottom of the meter. The customer decided to switch the transmitter from the right to the left which was accomplished by turning the meter upside down and flipping the transmitter. It obviously would be better to get the customer to decide transmitter positioning during the ordering process.

Roy and Mark are delighted with their new meter and getting a solution that was as easy as unbolting the old meter and bolting in a new one.
