Big Plans Underway for the Caloosahatchee River

caloosaThe water quality of the Caloosahatchee River in the Gulf Coast of Florida near Fort Myers may soon see a considerable improvement thanks to the efforts of the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD). According to news story on Florida Water Daily, the multimillion dollar Lake Hicpochee Storage and Hydrologic Enhancement Project was recently announced and one of its primary goals is aimed at boosting the river’s water quality.

Construction has already begun on the 500+ acre site situated to the north of Lake Hicpochee in Glades County. Per the SFWMD, the project will use the C-19 canal to grab surface water. Currently, this canal discharges its water into Caloosahatchee River. This water will then be kept in a reservoir that’s being built, allowing the water to flow into the lake after it’s been filtered naturally. The Caloosahatchee River is connected to Lake Hicpochee, which has since become a marsh.

Work on the Lake Hicpochee Storage and Hydrologic Enhancement Project began back in April and is expected to be complete by the summer of next year. Besides improving the water quality, water management officials will also have greater control over the freshwater flow down the Caloosahatchee River, which should allow for improved water storage and an overall healthier ecosystem.
