Flow Metering with Space Limitations

When space carries a hefty price tag, choosing a flow metering is critical. A common issue with the majority of flow metering technologies is indeed space limitations, which tend to present challenges due to the straight pipe run requirements needed for an accurate reading. For example, concentric orifice plate meters require as much as 40x diameters upstream and 20x diameters downstream. In other words, a 6” pipe will need 240” of straight pipe run, free of elbows or other line obstructions.

Thankfully, another effective option exists.

Using advanced differential pressure technology, McCrometer’s V-Cone® flow meter needs a mere 0 to 3x diameters of straight run upstream and 0x to 1x diameter of straight run downstream for accurate operation. The meter functions as its own flow conditioner, which allows it to measure turbulent flow scenarios without requiring lengthy straight runs. As an example, a V-Cone flow meter for 6” pipe would need just 0” to 18” of straight run pipe.

Besides water and wastewater, the V-Cone is also highly effective when used with steam, natural gas, chemical, and industrial applications.
