Prepping Your Water Meters for Winter

Florida is not somewhere that is known for its chilly winter temperatures. In fact, Florida has the mildest winters in the Continental United States, with average temperatures spanning from 65 degrees Fahrenheit to 41 degrees Fahrenheit and highs reaching nearly 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Still, even without the threat of snow and frost, water meters and other types of industrial metersmust be well prepared for a drastic drop in temperatures.

A drop in temperature can still negatively impact pipes. By winterizing faucets that are placed outside, you may be saving water meters and pipes from freezing in winter weather. Failure to prepare can cause pipe bursts, broken faucets, and a large amount of water wasted when temperatures increase in the spring (from turning them back on in warmer temperatures).

The best thing you can do when winter weather rolls around is to insulate water pipes in areas that are not heated. This is the main concern for areas that get colder than 32 degrees Fahrenheit, but it does not hurt to stay prepared should temperatures get in the low 40’s.

Be aware of where the property shut-off valve is located. If there is a water leak, knowing where to go immediately should there be a leak or pipe burst can save you enormous amounts of money and costs associated with water damage repair.
