The City of Gulfport, Mississippi was aware of its issues with sewer processing fees that were not being billed properly or accounted for. Due to a lack of a reliable method of measuring the sewer flow, there was not much that could be done to address the situation.
Gulfport sought the assistance of a company known for assisting municipalities with recouping lost revenue by identifying sewer flow to wastewater treatment plants that, for various reasons, is not measured. For more than three decades, the City had relied on data provided by their customer to bill them for their sewer processing fees. Based on the agreement, Gulfport was relying on the customer’s equipment for water flow measurement of the water to calculate processing fees.
After seeking outside help, Gulfport decided to go with Hach Data Delivery Services (DDS), the efficient flow monitoring service. A major convenience of Hach DDS is that all of the necessary equipment, support, and data transmission necessary for accurate flow data is provided as part of the fixed monthly fee and in real time. This allows customers to access the most recent data while also allowing them to analyze the data as soon as it’s available. Hach also provides a DDS Preferred Program which takes care of equipment installation and maintenance, reducing flow monitoring challenges.
After a successful pilot program where Gulfport saw positive results, Hach DDS was implemented for three years. Since the rollout, Gulfport’s Public Works Department has been able to take into account its aging infrastructure and create a more accurate plan for sewer capacity and any collection system changes.
