Despite its modern appeal, the City of North Miami Beach was until recently still using traditional manual meter reading and quarterly inspected leak detection service. For two weeks, surveyors were tasked with inspecting all 550 miles of the city’s pipeline system, a necessary but highly laborious and time consuming process despite meeting the necessary system and identity leak requirements. The city was aware of the numerous benefits of automated meter reading and leak detection and the significant savings in money, time, resources, and water.
To address its increasingly antiquated system, the City of North Miami Beach is currently in the process of deploying Itron’s Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) solution which includes modern leak detection technology and robust analytics features based in the cloud. The deployment plans include over 35,000 communication modules and more than 10,000 acoustic leak sensors. Despite being only being partially complete, the city is already receiving useful real-time data regarding customer water usage and potential system leaks. Leaks that once took over a year to identify can now be detected in as little as three days, recovering over 20 million gallons of water and saving the city over $37,000 annually.
As the City of North Miami Beach deploys its Itron AMI solution, customers will eventually have no need for an estimated bill and they will be able to keep tabs on exactly how much water they’re currently using simply by visiting a secure website.
