Itron is once again in the news for spearheading new initiatives aimed at improving metering technology. This time around, it is joining forces with volt/VAR optimization vendor Utilidata to create an app for use with Itron’s powerful OpenWay Riva IoT (Internet of Things) solution.
While most people immediately associate the word “app” with that of a smartphone app, in this case, apps function differently. Utilities use a broad array of grind control systems and software applications, many of which have been used for years and remain reliable, if perhaps deprecated. Older meters were not built with the power to take on multiple tasks aside from what they were specifically built to do, their core register functions to be specific.
With Itron’s OpenWay Riva platform, advanced metering infrastructures more closely resemble the standard of today’s smartphones. The system uses devices with enough processing power to multitask efficiently, including updating the internal software over the air. This software can take on various tasks beyond measuring flow or detecting leaks.
With the Itron and Utilidata collaboration, the app will create improvements in the data coming from every endpoint in the grid network as well as a reduction in the amount of data required to be sent up the network to the back office. Additionally, Utilities will be able to optimize the reliability and performance of their grid.
