Last year’s hurricane season caused billions of dollars worth of damage, much worse than the record set back in 2005. With the start of hurricane season less than a month away, it’s already being predicted this season is more than likely going to be another active one, with more than ten storms on the way in what may end up being an above normal season that may outdo 2017.
With that in mind, it is imperative that Utilities take the necessary steps to prepare. Thankfully, most Utilities are currently or have already planned ahead and implemented robust infrastructures to reduce the odds of catastrophic damage often caused by major storms such as last year’s Hurricane Irma. These infrastructures must take into account the potential for impact as well as the importance that customers being served have access to essential services during and after a major storm has come and gone.
Utilities that have implemented a smart grid infrastructure are well ahead of the curve. Miami, for example, was one of the cities affected by Irma, yet it was able to respond well thanks to a series of IoT sensors collecting data during all stages of the storm, from its impending arrival to its impact and aftermath. The cities can now utilize this vital data to better prepare should another storm impact the country this hurricane season, potentially reducing the economic impact.
