McCrometer reports that water utilities face the challenge of balancing tight budgets with the growing need to address water scarcity and climate change. Many utilities adopt a “wait until it’s broken to fix it” approach when it comes to upgrading their technologies, but relying on failing systems is a recipe for disaster. However, there is hope in the form of available funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) signed in 2021, which has allocated over $50 billion for water-related projects. It’s crucial for water utilities to realize that upgrading meters and implementing advanced metering technology are eligible for this funding. By investing in upgradable meters and strategically placing them at key metering points, utilities can future-proof their water distribution systems, enhance accuracy, reduce leaks, and mitigate water loss.
