Smart Meters to Replace Old Utility Meters in Aspen, CO

Aspen, CO will be replacing and upgrading thousands of electric and water utility meters to follow the Aspen Intelligent Metering Project. Approved in 2018, the project seeks to modernize utility metering and energy and water consumption in the city and data collection from thousands of customers. New meters will enable data to be consumed directly by the departments, alleviating the demand for on-site data collection. Customers will also be able to access their data for utility consumption.

Improved data quality is an expected benefit from the replacements and upgrades, giving more reliable support to efficiency programs and a smoother process for Aspen’s utility department to plan capital projects.

Aspen is not the only city to switch out utility meters. We can expect to see an exponential increase in the number of municipalities that upgrade in the coming years, favoring a technology-based utility system.

Smart meters are determined to simplify the process of collecting meter data for utilities such as water, electric, and gas. Smart meters can manage data collected in the field and prepare billing methods. They consolidate operations and connect systems through file interfaces automatically. IP-based communications can transfer data faster than collection systems with serial communications, allowing for an overall more efficient utility system. Automated network data transfer takes the place of manual file transfer, reducing labor time and human error.
