The FPI-X Mag Proves Itself to the City of Cedar Rapids

The FPI-X Mag Flow Meter by McCrometer has a well-deserved reputation for reliability and high performance, which has been bolstered by an in-depth study by Water World that assessed its implementation in a large Utility.

The Water Division for the City of Cedar Rapids, which numbers around 128,000 people, is responsible for over 50,000 metered accounts for industrial, commercial, and residential use. In 2011, the plant’s operators determined that they needed to replace under-performing flow meters in two booster stations and their water intake system.

The meter technology they were using was susceptible to electrical and radio frequency interference from electrical equipment in the station, including the pumps’ variable frequency drive. Moreover, the meters required considerable maintenance and frequent cleaning to remain accurate.

Thus Cedar Rapids Water Division needed meters that were more cost-effective, could manage multiple pumps and a variety of line sizes, are resistant to interference issues, and that could take into account the effects of condensation and exterior pipe rust. The replacement meters would have to deal with limited space, an irregular flow profile, and limited length of straight-run piping.

Given this challenging criteria, the Water Division reached out to McCrometer to analyze the situation and offer a recommendation. The solution was FPI-X Mag Flow Meter, the latest model in the company’s acclaimed FPI Mag product line.

This meter is specially designed to accurately measure flow from multiple pumps, with its dual sensor assembly being equipped to handle variances at the two booster stations. Thanks to its insertion-style design, it can be easily installed within the tight space requirements. Furthermore, its innovative multi-point electromagnetic flow sensing allows for accurate measurement under turbulent flow conditions. The FPI-X Mag was also very economical, with easy installation and minimal maintenance.

After more than two years of operation, Cedar Rapids Water Division has reported vastly improved accuracy and an almost complete elimination of maintenance issues. Such results explain why the Avanti Company is proud to offer the FPI-X Mag Flow Meter.
