As a bacteria, legionella may cause legionellosis, better known as the type of severe type of pneumonia called Legionnaires’ disease. If left untreated, it can become fatal. Legionella has greater chances of growing industrial buildings where water becomes stagnant, especially ones that may be empty. It can even resist the effects of chlorine, reinforcing the importance of testing and treatment. Potable water systems, cooling towers, and even water fountains are a few examples of modern water systems susceptible to legionella growth.
Ultrasonic clamp-on flow meters have been used to ensure the prevention and handling of legionella. The Dynasonics® TFX-5000 ultrasonic clamp-on meter, for example, can measure flow rate with a superb accuracy of +0.5%. The meter transmits a signal back to the controller depending on the flow rate, providing an informed response on what quantity of chemicals or positively charged ions are required to ensure optimum water treatment. In order to remove the legionella, additional chemicals or copper and silver may be needed based on the speed of the flow rate.
The ultrasonic clamp-on flow meter TFX-5000 suits a large variety of pipes, as small as ½” up to 48”. The TFX-5000 flow meter never comes into contact with the pipe liquid, eliminating the chance of contagion from entering the device, unlike injection meters that involve cutting piping and the chance of water leakage when installing. It is an excellent alternative for most pipe materials because of its convenient clamp-on nature. The meter can be clamped onto the pipe by a single installer and configured to be up and running within an hour. The TFX-5000 meter is easily removed and placed anywhere it is needed if service needs to be modified or tested on a different pipe.
