The Dutch utility Evides provides drinking water for more than two million businesses and households in The Netherlands. The utility contacted Syrinix to inquire whether transient monitoring could prove a viable solution in the location and detection of bursts as well as developing a targeted response to operations.
The plan to detect burst events began by determining which sites to monitor using the deployment planning tool developed by Syrinix. This tool can estimate the coverage of transient monitoring using a series of projected deployment locations. By simulating events, network response can be predicted, allowing a client to have a good range of event ranges that can be captured based on the proposed sites of installation. With these installation sites, a client is better able to refine its coverage level as needed.
After district metered area (DMA) deployment, events of distinct magnitude were simulated at several hydrant locations using a transition in fast flow. Using the simulated bursts near the DMA, the pressure wave is detected using synchronized PIPEMINDER devices. Each device uses a scoring algorithm for detection and instantly sends high sample rate data via a cellular network to the Syrinix cloud-based data analytics platform known as RADAR.
RADAR analyzes data from the multiple sensors automatically and calculates the exact start of the pressure wave at each monitor.
